Humbled
Hearts: The phrase khushu'-ul-qalb means 'for the heart to soften;
to be receptive to advice; to be obedient; to submit'. [ Ibn Kathir] In the
Qur'anic context, it implies 'a complete willingness to yield to the Divine
injunctions, or the Divine imperatives and prohibitions without allowing any
laxity in following them. [ Ruh-ul-Ma’ani]
Muslims are cautioned in this verse that they should prepare
themselves to turn to Allah totally and completely, and act upon the teachings
of their religion. All actions revolve around khushu`-ul-qalb Sayyidna Shaddad
Ibn Aws ؓ narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
said: "The first thing that will be taken away from the people will be
their humility or humbleness [ khushu']." [ Ibn Kathir]
the word "believers" is general, but it does not
apply to alI the Muslims; it refers to those particular Muslims who had
professed the faith verbally and joined the followers of the Holy Prophet (upon
whom be Allah's peace) though their hearts were devoid of any concern for
Islam. They were watching that the pagan forces were bent upon wiping out
Islam; they had encircled the handful of Muslims from all sides, who were being
made the target of persecution everywhere in Arabia, and thus oppressed the
Muslims were fleeing to Madinah empty-handed for refuge; the sincere Muslims
were extending to them whatever economic help they could; yet they were, at the
same time, engaged in a life and-death struggle with the enemy. But, in spite
of this, these people who professed the faith were not being moved at all.
(Tafheem Ul Quran)
This particular verse is a source of inspiration for many noble
people in history to turn back in their lives from meaningless life to a path
completely devoted to Almighty.
Is the time not come that the hearts of the believers should be humbled to Allah's remembrance and to the Truth that He has revealed, (57:16)
📍 Open Vs Constrict Hearts:
'To open someone's breast to Islam' means to make him feel fully convinced of
the truth of Islam and to remove all his doubts, hesitations and reluctance.
Signs of 'Sharh al-Sadr in Din
Hakim in al-Mustadrak and Baihaqi in Shu'ab al-'Iman report
from Sayyidna `Abdullah ibn Masud ؓ : When this verse was revealed, the
Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ requested him to explain the meaning of Sharh al-Sadr, the
opening of the heart for Islam. He said: `Allah Ta`ala puts a light in the
heart of a believer through which his heart opens up for the perception,
understanding and acceptance of truth. The Sahabah submitted: `Is there a sign
which will help recognize the person who has such Sharh al-Sadr? He said: `Yes!
The sign is that 'Akhirah and its blessings become the object of all his
desires. He avoids uncalled-for desires and fleeting enjoyments and starts
getting ready for death before it comes.'
Kalabi has said: `the narrowing of his heart means that no
passage for the entry of truth and good remains open there.' A similar
explanation has also been reported from Sayyidna Faruq al-A'zam ؓ and Sayyidna
`Abdullah ibn `Abbas ؓ has said: `When he hears the ذِکر Dhikr of Allah, he feels being harassed
and when he listens to what is Kufr and Shirk, his heart relishes it. (Marif ul
Quran)
Thus, (it is a fact that) whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his
breast for Islam; and whomsoever He wills to let go astray, He causes his
breast to become strait and constricted, as if he were climbing towards the
heaven. (6:125)
📍 Soft Hearts: Those
who are true believers their skins and their hearts become soft enough to tend
to the remembrance of Allah. that is, the recitation of the Qur'an affects them
in two ways. First, as said immediately above, when they hear the warnings of
punishment, it makes their hair stand on end. Then they listen to the verses
promising mercy and forgiveness which takes them to a state when their bodies
and hearts turn tenderized, mellowed in the remembrance of Allah. Sayyidah
Asma' bint Abi Bakr ؓ says that this used to be the common emotional state of
the noble Sahabah - when the Qur'an was recited before them, tear would be
rolling down their eyes, and the hair would be standing on end. (Qurtubi)
It has been narrated by Sayyidna `Abdullah Ibn `Abbas ؓ that
the Holy Prophet ﷺ said, "A servant
over whose body hair would stand on end due to the fear of Allah, then, Allah
Ta’ala forbids the Fire from ever touching his body. (Qurtubi)
Allah has revealed the best teaching, a self-consistent Book which
repeats its contents in manifold forms whereat shiver the skins of those that
hold their Lord in awe, and then their skins and their hearts soften for
Allah's remembrance. That is Allah's Guidance wherewith He guides whosoever He
pleases. And he whom Allah does not guide to the Right Path has none to guide
him. (39:23)
📍 Sound (Saleem) Hearts:
A Saleem heart meaning, free from any
impurity or Shirk. Ibn Sirin said, "The clean heart knows that Allah is
true, that the Hour will undoubtedly come and that Allah will resurrect those
who are in the graves."Sa`id bin Al-Musayyib said,"The clean heart is
the sound heart."
This is the heart of the believer On the Day of Judgement,
only a sound heart, sound in faith and free from disobedience and sin, will be
of any avail to man and not wealth and children, for wealth and children can be
useful only if one possesses a sound heart. Wealth will be useful if one would
have spent it sincerely and faithfully for the sake of Allah, otherwise even a
millionaire will be a poor man there. Children also will he of help only to the
extent that a person might have educated them in Faith and good conduct to the
best of his ability; otherwise even if the son is a Prophet, his father will
not escape punishment, if he died in the state of unbelief, because such a
father will have no share in the goodness of his children.
the Day when nothing will avail, neither wealth nor offspring, (88) but
only he that brings to Allah a sound heart will (attain to success)."
(26:89)
