Heedless Hearts & Mind

When it became difficult for the Quraysh chiefs in Makkah to stop the people from believing, they also came up with a recipe like the Jewish scholars. They used to come and sit in the assembly of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and listen to his words with great interest. They used to show that we are all listening very attentively, so that the common people would see and understand that our intelligent leaders are really serious about listening, understanding and believing these things, but then later coming to the public and rejecting the message. It was a trick of theirs to deceive the common people, so that the people would think that these leaders of ours are wise and intelligent. If these people reject this invitation after hearing and understanding it, then there must be some scientific and rational reasons for it. Therefore, while mentioning this conspiracy of theirs in the verse under review, it was said that some of them come to you and apparently listen to your words with great attention.

Why did Allah put these curtains on their hearts and minds? All this is in accordance with the Sunnah of Allah that when the interlocutors of the Prophet persist in their stubbornness showing envy, arrogance and prejudice against his invitation, their thinking and understanding abilities are removed. As it is said in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 7: Allah has finished their hearts and their hearing and their deception. Therefore, it will not be useful for them to listen to the words of the Prophet ﷺ with apparent attention.

 

•           وَمِنۡهُمۡ مَّنۡ يَّسۡتَمِعُ اِلَيۡكَ‌‌ ۚ وَجَعَلۡنَا عَلٰى قُلُوۡبِهِمۡ اَكِنَّةً اَنۡ يَّفۡقَهُوۡهُ وَفِىۡۤ اٰذَانِهِمۡ وَقۡرًا ‌ؕ وَاِنۡ يَّرَوۡا كُلَّ اٰيَةٍ لَّا يُؤۡمِنُوۡا بِهَا‌ ؕ حَتّٰۤى اِذَا جَآءُوۡكَ يُجَادِلُوۡنَكَ يَقُوۡلُ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡۤا اِنۡ هٰذَاۤ اِلَّاۤ اَسَاطِيۡرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ ۞

•           ان میں سے بعض لوگ ایسے ہیں جو کان لگا کر تمہاری بات سنتے ہیں مگر حال یہ ہے کہ ہم نے اُن کے دلوں پر پردے ڈال رکھے ہیں جن کی وجہ سے وہ اس کو کچھ نہیں سمجھتے اور ان کے کانوں میں گرانی ڈال دی ہے (کہ سب کچھ سننے پر بھی کچھ نہیں سنتے) وہ خواہ کوئی نشانی دیکھ لیں، اس پر ایمان لا کر نہ دیں گے حد یہ ہے کہ جب وہ تمہارے پاس آ کر تم سے جھگڑتے ہیں تو ان میں سے جن لوگوں نے انکار کا فیصلہ کر لیا ہے وہ (ساری باتیں سننے کے بعد) یہی کہتے ہیں کہ یہ ایک داستان پارینہ کے سوا کچھ نہیں

•      There are those among them who (apparently) listen to you, but We have put coverings on their hearts, so that they do not understand, and heaviness in their ears. If they were to see all the signs, they would still not believe in them, so much so that, when they come to quarrel with you, the disbelievers say (of the Qur‘an), :It is nothing but tales of the ancients. [6:25]

 

 

مکہ میں قریش کے سرداروں کے لیے جب عوام کو ایمان لانے سے روکنا مشکل ہوگیا تو انہوں نے بھی علماء یہود کی طرح ایک ترکیب نکالی۔ وہ بڑے اہتمام کے ساتھ آکر حضور ﷺ کی مجلس میں بیٹھتے اور بڑے انہماک سے کان لگا کر آپ ﷺ کی باتیں سنتے۔ وہ یہ ظاہر کرتے تھے کہ ہم سب کچھ بڑی توجہ سے سن رہے ہیں ‘ تاکہ عام لوگ دیکھ کر یہ سمجھیں کہ واقعی ہمارے ذی فہم سردار یہ باتیں سننے ‘ سمجھنے اور ماننے میں سنجیدہ ہیں ‘ مگر پھر بعد میں عوام میں آکر ان باتوں کو ردّ کردیتے۔ عام لوگوں کو دھوکہ دینے کے لیے یہ ان کی ایک چال تھی ‘ تاکہ عوام یہ سمجھیں کہ ہمارے یہ سردار سمجھدار اور ذہین ہیں ‘ یہ لوگ شوق سے محمد ﷺ کی محفل میں جاتے ہیں اور پورے انہماک سے ان کی باتیں سنتے ہیں ‘ پھر اگر یہ لوگ اس دعوت کو سننے اور سمجھنے کے بعد ردّ کرر ہے ہیں تو آخراس کی کوئی علمی اور عقلی وجوہات تو ہوں گی۔ لہٰذا آیت زیر نظر میں ان کی اس سازش کا تذکرہ کرتے ہوئے فرمایا گیا کہ اے نبی ﷺ ان میں سے کچھ لوگ آپ کے پاس آتے ہیں اور آپ کی باتیں بظاہر بڑی توجہ سے کان لگا کر سنتے ہیں۔

وَجَعَلْنَا عَلٰی قُلُوْبِہِمْ اَکِنَّۃً اَنْ یَّفْقَہُوْہُ وَفِیْٓ اٰذَانِہِمْ وَقْرًاط وَاِنْ یَّرَوْا کُلَّ اٰیَۃٍ لاَّ یُؤْمِنُوْا بِہَا ط۔

اللہ نے ان کے دلوں اور دماغوں پر یہ پردے کیوں ڈال دیے ؟ یہ سب کچھ اللہ کی اس سنت کے مطابق ہے کہ جب نبی کے مخاطبین اس کی دعوت کے مقابلے میں حسد ‘ تکبر اور تعصب دکھاتے ہوئے اپنی ضد پر اڑے رہتے ہیں تو ان کی سوچنے اور سمجھنے کی صلاحیتیں سلب کرلی جاتی ہیں۔ جیسے سورة البقرۃ آیت 7 میں فرمایا گیا : خَتَمَ اللّٰہُ عَلٰی قُلُوْبِہِمْ وَعَلٰی سَمْعِہِمْط وَعَلٰٓی اَبْصَارِہِمْ غِشَاوَۃٌز۔ لہٰذا ان کا بظاہرتوجہ سے نبی ﷺ کی باتوں کو سننا ان کے لیے مفید نہیں ہوگا۔

حَتّٰیٓ اِذَا جَآءُ وْکَ یُجَادِلُوْنَکَ یَقُوْلُ الَّذِیْنَ کَفَرُوْٓا اِنْ ہٰذَآ اِلَّآ اَسَاطِیْرُ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ۔

یہ جو کچھ آپ ﷺ ہمیں سنا رہے ہیں یہ پرانی باتیں اور پرانے قصے ہیں ‘ جو معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ آپ نے یہودیوں اور نصرانیوں سے سن رکھے ہیں۔
